I sit silently this morning, overwhelmed with emotions, as I reflect on the incredible journey of my book launches. These events have been more than just opportunities to promote my work; they have been moments of connection, love, and gratitude. Each experience has enriched my heart, sharpened my mind, and nourished my soul. In this blog post, I want to share the highlights and express my heartfelt appreciation to all those who made it possible.
As I come down from an incredible high, I find myself scrolling through the photographs captured during my final book launch. The joy and excitement captured in those moments remind me of the amazing time I had. Every day since then has been a good day, and I can’t help but feel grateful for reaching this milestone. Turning 50 feels like a new chapter filled with endless possibilities, and I’m ready to embrace them.
One of my book launches took place in a special venue, Wordsworth in Gardens Center. This intimate space held deep significance for me, as it brought back memories of my childhood in Bo Kaap. The location’s nostalgia, coupled with the warmth and love of everyone involved, made the event truly memorable. I am eternally grateful for the team at Wordsworth and the delicious refreshments from Bootleggers Coffee Company that made the night unforgettable.
Food has always been a love language for me, and my book launch beautifully portrayed this connection. With a stunning setting created by Shamila’s Kitchen, Fatima Razzak (The Secret Tea Garden), Zeenat Allie, and @rid1sadxb, the Secret Garden event in Durbanville was a feast for the senses. The dishes served were more than just culinary delights; they represented the bond and love shared among us. Food will continue to be a language spoken at the tables we gather around, nourishing both body and soul. A special mention goes to Bottoms Up for their contribution to the launch, providing guests with their favourite cup of coffee as they arrived. The smell of coffee in the morning added to the ambience and made the event even more enjoyable. It’s the little details like these that create a memorable experience for everyone involved.
Signing books and connecting with readers during the launches was a humbling experience. The support and encouragement from those who purchased my book touched me deeply. I felt overwhelmed by the love and kindness that surrounded me. It reminded me of the importance of having a supportive community, or as Jane Howard said, a clan, a network, a tribe, or a family. I am grateful to have such a community, and their presence made the launch a celebration of love and togetherness.
As I settle into my seat on the plane, heading back home from an eventful trip to Cape Town, a sense of gratitude washes over me. I realize that none of the past two weeks’ whirlwind experiences would have been possible without the love and support of my loved ones and loyal fans. The success of my cookbook launch events and the overwhelming response from people who share my passion for food have touched me deeply. Surrounded by such support, I am inspired to continue sharing my culinary journey with the world.
