ABOUT
“To me, food is not just a meal; it’s a story.” – Unknown
Welcome to By Cariema, my playground of culinary adventure and the vibrant tapestry of my life. I’m a self-proclaimed nomad with an insatiable desire to explore the world, and my culinary journey reflects this constant quest for discovery.
I am a South African food writer, chef, and entrepreneur currently based between Dubai and Cape Town. My culinary diploma from the International Centre for Culinary Arts set the stage for my passion for creating delicious, evocative dishes.
Having laid down roots in Dubai in 2010 with my husband and sons, I proudly call this dazzling city my home. However, my heart remains deeply tethered to South Africa, the land of my birth. In September 2024, I moved back to Cape Town, finding myself divided between two homes as I travel back to Dubai, where my family still resides.
2024 marked my EAT PRAY LOVE journey, a heartfelt quest to reconnect with my culinary roots and heritage. This journey took me to enchanting places like the Spice Islands in Indonesia, Malacca, one of the oldest cities in Malaysia, and Amsterdam in the Netherlands, home to the former headquarters of the Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie (VOC). Each of these destinations offered a unique insight into my Cape Malay heritage.
The Cape Malays, descendants of enslaved people brought to South Africa during the 17th century, have a rich culinary heritage deeply influenced by Indonesian, Malay, Indian and Dutch cuisines. My travels to these significant locations allowed me to explore the diverse spices, cooking techniques, and histories that have intersected to form the vibrant tapestry of Cape Malay cooking. These experiences not only enriched my understanding of my culinary heritage but also inspired me to celebrate those influences in my own kitchen.
Through these pages and my cookbooks, I invite you to explore the treasures of my South African, Indonesian and Malaysian ancestral roots. Each recipe carries the rich traditions and tantalising flavours of Cape Malay cuisine, telling a story of connection, culture, and love. And while my heritage plays a significant role in my cooking, I also relish the opportunity to create dishes from various culinary traditions around the globe.
