Most Cape Malays love breaking their fast with savoury treats. This is why you’ll find a selection cocktail pies adorning our iftar tables. Sometimes the filling would be a traditional one, beef mince with sago, seasoned with salt, pepper and chili flakes, and sometimes the pastries would be filled with peppery steak. In this video, I share with you one of the fillings I’ve prepared for Ramadan this years. The pastry puffs can be frozen also for up to three months, and I often make about two batches and bake it when I need it. You’ll require about two sheets of puff pastry – a good quality shop bought pastry is ideal. If you prefer to make your own, then by all means, have at it! The filling should yield about 10 to 12 pastry puffs, depending on its size.
